Three things Div 1 taught us

Dave Plumhoff has just three things to say about Hayling and here they are:

1. Kent were far too strong

Kent were the favourites and duly responded to these claims with an emphatic victory, 10 games clear of Chiltern and 23 games clear of Southern – they were joint top with both of these regions on day 1. Day 2 saw what many will agree won’t be repeated any time soon, they dropped only 3 games, winning a 37 of 40 games available, absolutely hammering every region they came up against. It was a stunning weekend for Kent, their strength in depth and winning mentality are just a cut above any other region and its going to take a big response from Chiltern to knock them off their perch in 2015.

2. London’s talk of challenging was futile

Talk of London competing for the Division 1 title were put straight to bed on the first day, a big defeat from Southern, a region many believed they would over take this season, and this set the tone for a weekend where they just weren’t good enough. More will be needed for 2015 if they are to compete but this year’s poor show feels like a step back.

3. Southern proved the doubters wrong

Southern came into this year’s Championships with what many people believed was a poor squad, after some surprising results in their qualifying series, this however proved to be all talk as the Southerners proved they were still good enough to give Chiltern and Kent a problem. The Saturday saw them win 42 games from the 56 on offer and end the day joint top with the two favourites, Kent and Chiltern. Sunday though was a complete turnaround, each team totally collapsing and Southern ended day two 23 games off the pace – luckily 3rd place was secured already.
